Anybody out there following the Grand Am?

I was trying to ask 'how many pro drivers are in the field (both classes)'.I know who Scott Pruett and a few others are (Garcia, Rice etc) but dont know many of the others especially in GT, thats why I asked. I wouldnt call Tracy Krohn a pro driver though.

A pro driver is any driver that gets payed to drive, so therefor all the drivers are pro regardless of talent level.

Justin pretty much summed it up, but if you look at the roster of people who have/do race in Grand Am, it's a huge list. It almost seems like everyone has raced in it at some point.

By the way, I love Grand Am and was at Mid Ohio earlier this year. We usually watch all the races and my friend is good friends with the Dempsey team, just by making T-Shirts once.

I saw this Grand Am Car back in June at some insurance place:

Road Atlanta is officially on the 2011 schedule. Two races, actually and they'll be joined by a Nationwide NASCAR race. The races, (which will be Rolex Sports Car, and CTSCC), will run June 23-26

It looks like you had a good time and thanks for sharing the photo's.
Looking at the photo's made me remember when the series came to Lime Rock this year. Good times, good times.

It was unfortunate for the MSR team to have that fire, but they got help from a great community that is the Grand Am series, and motor racing in general.

Your welcome, and yeah we did have a good time. Didnt get to spend as much time in the "boot" section as I would have liked. Plus the camera battery was about dead so no pics from there either.

Thats one place thats on my radar to go to a race at. Everyone I have ever talked to thats been there for the weekend has really had a good time.

Yes it was, and I was glad to see them do as well as they did after that. That could have really crippled the low funded team for the rest of the year. We had just got back to the front straight to watch the end of the race when that happened. I bet we werent there 5 mins till it happened.

Well, the 24 Hours of Daytona is coming up in a couple weeks. What's more, the Grand-Am cars will be the first cars to race at Daytona since the track was re-surfaced last year. So, we've got 70+ cars roaring around fresh asphalt for 24 hours. Remember, there will be 4 classes racing with the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge cars running along side the Grand Am cars.

There are a few new entries this year. For the CTC, Nissan has entered the 370Z, Hyundai still has yet to enter their Genesis which was on the entry list last year and Audi is still looking to enter the 2009 TT.

As for the GT it's still Camaro, Porsche, RX-8 BMW M6 and Ferrari 430 Challenge cars.

The Conti cars run the day before which is a shame because I never get to see them race. I always see the 'remains' of the cars in the paddock on Saturday morning. Wish they would run the Continental race saturday morning instead of having that parade of old cars run in the morning i could care less about.

Anyone else attending this year? This will be my third year in a row attending and wouldn't mind meeting a few GTP members. And thankfully the party porch will be open for spectators this year so we can get a view of the bus stop for once. Never understood why they keep the back grand stands closed during the race.

I'll be there for the 24. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to miss the Continental Tire Challenge Series race on Friday but I was able to see a few of the cars run last weekend at the Roar Before the 24. Good to see some new teams and cars on the track! Didn't know they're opening the area overlooking the bus stop....I'll have to make it over there some time during the night.

I posted some pictures from last weekend's Winter Test on the photography forum (and more posted in the link in my sig) - https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=160825

The new Flying Lizard Porsche DP entry looks nice. Anyone heard if Ferrari has a DP entry yet? They've been talking about it for a couple years. I'll have to catch the CTC race on Speed on February 5th.

Still no Ferrari as far as I know. Its only a matter of time until someone just grabs a Ferrari engine and uses it like what was done with the Porsche V8 engine.

And love your photos boone. Wish my pictures came out half as nice as yours. Really like the night shot of the Flying Lizard Riley and the Suntrust Dallara on the banking.

Should see some more additions in a couple years when the new formula is in place. We are at the end of the 10 year period for the current cars. Some of the changes for the new cars will interest more manufacturers. Right now it looks as if there will be 48 cars for the 24 hours and 71 for the Daytona 200 CT series event.

1 week until the Daytona 24 kicks off. Who is going to be attending this year? Wouldn't mind meeting up with a few sim racers and having a few beers.

Just seen this thread. We usually go to Watkins Glenn and Mid Ohio every year. Only got to go to Watkins Glenn this year.

Since I live in Ohio, Mid-Ohio is pretty convenient for me and I wanted to go last year but I forgot about those plans until it was too late. In fact, I just remembered wanting to attend the race on the actual race weekend that it was taking place. I would like to go this year, but it's one of those things I think about in the off season and tend to forget during the months in between now and when it's actually time to go.

I'll just be watching it on Speed, as usual. Can't wait, really.

I'll be at the race. I'm still debating on getting a cheap hotel room in the area for the night. I'd love to be there for the sunrise on Sunday. I've tried to sleep in my car previous years with no success (thanks, Mazda...seriously could you make the sound of the RX-8 more annoying?).

NapoleonMikey - send me a PM with your contact info if you want to meet up. As always, text messages work best when you're at the track unless it's under a caution. And it might be sort of difficult for me to get some free time early on as I'll need to be taking pictures at specific locations during the first 4 hours of the race.

At least they look like RX-8s. To me, thats what matters.

Ive had no problem sleeping in my car the last 2 years. Ok maybe not last year but that was not from the sound that was from the wet and cold. Seeing as its just an hour drive for me i never bother getting a hotel. Though I did learn after last year bringing an extra set of dry clothes is a good idea.

I would not like to try and sleep with the GT RX-8's running around the track but I do love how they sound.
What a distinct sound it is too, nothing like ZOOM ZOOM though.
The pop when they shift is awesome, simple awesome.

Just try to get some sleep at Daytona with them racing...I guarantee your opinion will change.

Agreed, I could not do it last year. So I went home and returned in the morning. Actually it had more to do with the creepy drunk guy who would not go away. Seriously, I could not in good faith leave my girlfriend in the truck and go down to the horseshoe and feel good about it.

I was going to go to the Fresh From Florida 200 today, as it was awesome last year, but had to work sadly. I'll be watching on Speed this year. Maybe I'll try again sometime, but last year really was a let down. Not the racing, just the attendees and the weather...

Please bring back more good pictures Mikey and Boone.

Anybody know what happened to the #70 Mazda? Half the car is missing and Speed hasn't shown what happened.

And a 2 hour delay for fog.

The 70 had a flat that ripped a lot of body work at one time yesterday,
Heavy fog this morning.

Great job by the Ganassi boys ans TRG.

I can stop myself watching Brundle's epic car control on the last lap restart over and over again.

Got back from the race due to waking up and feeling like crap. Missed the end because I couldn't stay awake to watch the broad cast. Congrats to the 01 though and ill be sure to upload some of my pics as soon as I can once the camera gets done transferring them to the computer.
