Hamilton still leads the qualifying championship despite the last 2 weekends, if Hungary is dry and Hamilton's qualifying lap isn't ruined by underfueling/puncture/Maldonado then I think he will get pole and win on Sunday. He's the only the driver to reach Q3 at every race weekend this year.

I thought I should add my 2 cents.

No drivers made it to F1 the pinnacle of motorsport being a "gentleman"...

How about JB? A stand up guy, who won himself a world championship.

Being a gentlemen on and off track garners a certain amount of respect which means people are less likely to get aggressive with them. Drivers like that don't give any stick, so they don't receive any which I imagine makes their lives much easier on track.

F1 would be a whole lot better if everybody was a real gent. People would respect each other on track, wouldn't mouth off at each other post race and it would give the sport an even better image.

People forget that these drivers are roughly the best 24 for the job out of 7 billion people. If a driver is good enough to get into F1 then success from then on is down to luck, whether the car suits a driver and how good the team/car is.

I agree and said something similar in the Maldonado debate a a few weeks ago. Seeing as all the drivers are within a few tenths of each other, I judge them on consistency and race craft, something the FI drivers have a lot of I've seen.

I dont agree, Alonso is loved by all his team, except maybe his teammate, and I never saw any bad comments about Alonso by someone from his team, except during the Mclaren area but that's because Mclaren was supporting Hamilton. I agree that asking Ferrari to tell Massa to let him pass was a bad move and I dont like this kind of stuff. However he's a great driver and all the team is behind him, otherwise he wouldnt have 22 race in the points, specialy since he didnt and probably still dont have the best car of the pack.

I'm not an Alonso fan, I love the Mclaren boys but still you just can't skip what Alonso is achieving this year. It's trully amazing.

He is extremely talented. I cannot deny that. I know Ferrari loves him but I was referring to the few years before that. He did not get along with mclaren and we all know why but his second stint at Renault was not happy go lucky either. I remember him publicly saying that if Renault could not give him a top running car he was going to leave. A few months after there was also much speculation about him wanting to to go Ferrari and being in talks with them. I don't believe Renault ever made any public remarks but things in the team at the end of 2009 were not that great. Especially with the whole crash gate thing which was no fault of Alonso. The other driver Piquet Jr. I think? was not happy and a few more members of the team were on his side.

In my eyes I was nervous about him being at ferrari at first but now that has obviously changed. He is amazing at what he does i have nothing against him.

The only problem I see is that Ferrari are developing the car around Alonso and they expect Massa to just get used to it. Massa might just have a very different driving style then Alonso so while it may not work for him, Fernando feels very comfortable in it. Though the last few races Massa has been doing better. The crash in the beginning ruined his race obviously but he had to go all the way to the back of the field and he finished somewhere near where he started I believe. That is fairly impressive considering the crash happened at the first corner and he had to drive around with no front wing losing positions left and right. Then he had a long pit stop so by the time he got out, he was almost 3/4 of a lap behind the leaders.

Maybe I am hearing things but Felipe Massa's Ferrari in the first practice session sounds a little funny. Just a little. Could just be an exhaust pipe loose.

Mclaren finish 1st (Hamilton) and 2nd (Button) in FP1. Full results below.

FP1 Results
They're half a second ahead... Either they were running a Quali fuel load, or their new upgrades put them way ahead of the game.

It's FP1. It probably will mean nothing come Saturday.
Weather should be clear, right?

Hope it's the latter, but yeah, FP1 means nothing.

Hopefully it'll stay clear for the coming days.

Back to the offtrack advantages subject.

Sam Michael (McLaren) is interested to see how it'll be handled here, especially in qualifying.

"the issue is, should the surface off the track have so much grip? That is the bigger issue, because you want to have a surface that allows you to survive and get back on track, but definitely you don't want a surface that allows you to take advantage."

The more I think of it the more I'm convinced the solution is a deterring grass/gravel patch, then more tarmac/concrete for safety.

No surprise here. I see RedBul and Ferrari seeting the pace here. Yes Mclaren are quick but i am not too convinced about their pace yet, we will see in qualifying. I see Alonso and Vettel going head to head in here.

The Red Bull cars don't seem to look quite happy round here. It might be the engine map change that's hurting them or maybe they're just sandbagging. All will be revealed tomorrow afternoon I guess.

I wonder how much the repaved sections of the track will affect grip by the time we reach qualifying and the race.

Kimi Raikkonen P2 in a practice session??!! When does that ever happen this season! And eh says he 'found something" that enabled him to go faster? Is it the steering. This might be a good weekend for him. I think he will finally out qualify grosjean on a dry track this weekend.

He found he's faster on incomplete sessions :D

lol. The absolute instant i edit my message you replied.

How come I have absolutely no memory of last years Hungarian GP?

My memory of last year is Hamilton and Vettel going side by side through Turn One, and then Vettel going wide and Hamilton taking the lead...

Then he spun and almost forced Di Resta off of track...

I like the 1st part more.

Here's another question for you. Is my memory just that bad or was Juan Pablo Montoya a fairly clean driver in F1?

I ask because the way JPM races in GRand-AM and Nascar you would swear he would have been worse than Pastor Maldonado in F1.

Montoya was very, very aggressive in a similar way to Hamilton. He could pull off some very clean and very spectacular overtakes at a time when overtaking was very difficult.
Maldonado is aggressive and seems incapable of driving a clean race. Montoya is/was way way better than that.

I'd also like to add that this is why Kobayashi is so impressive to me as he's just as ultra-aggressive as Hamilton or Montoya but he very rarely screws it up. Its impressive to repeatedly pull off very last-minute diving overtakes and frequently without much contact. I'm sure many drivers are very worried when they see any of these drivers behind them.

That what I was thinking. Montoya was excellent in F1 with a few wins as well. Very clean and aggressive. He seems to have left that behind when he left F1.

JPM and Raikkonen best teammates ever!
