Israel - Palestine discussion thread

Its Shia populated city, Hezbollah is dominant Shia power in Lebanon. Seems logical that city mayor is controlled or member of Hezbollah.

Googling get me few post few years old about him being Hezbollah member. Nothing official, that's why I asked, not stated.
Are you really going with "people of a certain religion, or elected by people of a certain religion, are likely to be terrorists"?

Are you really going with "people of a certain religion, or elected by people of a certain religion, are likely to be terrorists"?
It's even more amusing because it has been stated that not all Russians are genocidal, fascist maniacs because of the actions of Putin's government.

Every(or almost every) mayor in Nazi Germany or Soviet Union was member of Nazi party or KPSU, thats how its working in totalitarian states. Lebanon in messier state, so I dont know if he member of Hezbollah or not, but it seems logical. As previously was stated, Hezbollah isnt just terrorist organisation, its quasi state with its own police, army, medicine, etc.

Head of Hamas and many "soldiers" dead. Head of Hezbollah and high-ranking members dead. Where does it go from here....

Good, you saw the date. It's like it's predicting the future. And we've been played. You are reading it from the horse's mouth.

This was always the gameplan. Israel knows it (and is happy to kill civilians because they aren't Jews). Hamas knows it (and is happy for civilians to die because it will drag people into conflict). Musk knows it (because he wants power).

It's a sucky feeling. I spent time in 2015 volunteering for a Syrian crisis group amidst the rise of ISIS. I was also wanting to volunteer in Gaza the year before.

This whole schtick of pretending everyone but you is a moron is... well, it's a mood for sure:
Hamas wants to wipe out Israel and will put the people it claims to represent (having lied its way into power) in harm's way to achieve this unachieveable goal. Netanyahu is a murderous prick who is more than happy to shoot through those Palestinians to achieve his much more achieveable goals (what with having one of the most advanced militaries in the world) because he doesn't even view them as human, thinks cramming two million of them into an open-air ghetto/prison in the first place is just fine, and in any case wants their land for Israel and needs an enemy to justify flattening it to the piss-weak international community.

There is indeed a terrible fault on both sides that has brought about this horrible situation. About the only equal part of it though is that neither of the sides cares about killing Palestinians.
Posted in January, and hardly a new sentiment even then.

But sure, you're the free-thinking prophet with the unique world-view and superior thoughts.

It's not new and I'm not claiming I'm some magical prophet but the discussion is kinda stagnant here as people refuse to look deeper into the history and acknowledge just how much it's down to religion and the effect it will have on the world. It's a bit silly to say this all started in 1948.

2 state solution? Impossible.
1 state solution? Impossible.
Complete genocide of the Palestinians? Impossible.

This will be played out in the West now and people will associate into tribes based on it. Those tribes include religious factions and will influence elections:
That is with a Muslim population of 6%.

If we do not acknowledge differences between religions, and assume that Mormonism is the same as Islam is the same as Zoroastrianism, we will be in for a wild ride.

The riots targeted primarily Muslims and asylum seekers based on one false tweet. What happens when the next attack that is actually committed by an Islamist happens? We've already dodged a few thanks to the security services.

Who... who are you addressing here?

This is just rambling, and I've no idea who it's aimed at.

Well that's just nonsense.

The impact both religion and nationalism have had as causes of the current situation have been discussed at length here.

Ah, the clarity of the absolutist.

And we are back to your main interest I see, that didn't take long. Do you conflate support for Gaza/Palestine with support for Hamas? I quit as a Labour party member due to its stance on the conflict, do you conflate that as somehow supporting Hamas?

No one has done this, that some people have said they treat all religions the same does not allow you to extrapolate that into they think no differences exist, that's a bad-faith argument.

I also remember my first politics seminar in sixth form.
That's the problem. Too many people are playing student politics when the situation is so much more complicated than that with a much more involved history.

What do they say to this:

You see how it isn't as simple as: "you can't bomb the UN!!".

Reading that....
Does it justify targeting UN positions?
How should UNIFIL have proceeded?
Is there really rot in the UN chain of command?

Do we take this corroborating evidence with a grain of salt:

And what about Al Qaeda's advice:
Does Hamas listen to that?
What does it mean for Muslims worldwide?

And now there's been a ballistic missile strike in Tel Aviv without warning....

Do protesters even realise a tenth of the story behind this conflict? Or are they seeing pictures of dead babies, hearing "GENOCIDE" and then marching....

It's not their fault - again I already volunteered for previous crises in the ME - but it pays to become informed.

Anyone who'll listen. It's pretty obvious the split between left and right is a chasm now. The right don't interest me because they can't listen to reason. The left at least can, but seemingly go into things blind atm.

But you're not addressing anyone and certainly not engaging with anyone. Then you wheel round and denigrate the whole site.

So again, who is this rambling actually aimed at?
The people in this part of the forum who are more to the traditional Left since the Right leaners are no-hopers. It's not a slight of the site, it's showing how tribal even politics is, and how people aren't necessarily embracing multiple sources of information and changing/evolving their views. That's a big problem and the picture below isn't limited to Silicon Valley IMO:

So we can move the discussion on from 1948 then and talk about how the region can develop. The problem will remain intractable until we honestly examine what's going on.

Israel is the only place in the ME where the Christian population is growing. Why?
Is the lot of Arab Israelis better than Jews in other ME countries?
What is the end goal for the Palestinians and the Israelis?

I think you'll find that there's plenty of right-leaning members here - to the point where some people in your position of the rambling, bad faith postmodernist du jour have rage quit with accusations of the site being too right for their left thinking - most of whom won't touch Trumpism with the longest pole in the boathouse, and won't appreciate your label.
It's not a slight of the site
Sure Jan GIF

Most of this forum seems stuck in 2000s-2010s thinking.
The unearned arrogance is astonishing.

Why are you answering questions with questions?

Do you hold the site and its members in such low regard (to your clearly towering and balanced intellect /s) that you do not need to answer them?

With this
UNIFIL being supine to Hezbollah and now Guterres meeting Putin and being pally with Lukashenko, serious questions need to be asked about the UN.

EDIT: Added context:

This is a mess, and I don't mean the sitation alone.

The sole source for this appears to the IDF, which simply makes it an unsubstantiated claim they have been making for years, and to date have only shown evidence for around a dozen people (out of 30k staff - well a lot less now), the MSN peice does nothing to change that.

The Times article is subscription only, so not much use (and Wayback doesn't have it archived for a workaround), so all we can see is the head and by-lines, which alone don't support your text...

...and then finally we have your 'context' which is nothing of the sort, it's an un-cited opinion piece, we have no idea who it is from or what the credibility of it is (but given the way it's written it doesn't come across as balanced of evidenced).

I do not understand this. This literally took me 2 minutes:

If the IDF claims are unsubstantiated, every death count is unsubstantiated too. It works both ways.

The Times paywall has a workaround that I've explained before but I'm not sure if it's approved here (it's an archive site).

This is the relevant quote:

Kyiv had argued that Guterres should not meet with a “war criminal”, less than two years after the International Criminal Court issued a warrant for Putin’s arrest on charges of unlawfully deporting Ukrainian children from occupied areas of Ukraine to Russia.

Guterres also caused disquiet by hugging Alexander Lukashenko, the dictator of Belarus, and exchanging cheerful comments with him on the sidelines of the summit.

Lukashenko has imprisoned rivals and provided his country as a launching pad for Russian missile attacks on Ukraine. Jan Phillip Albrecht, president of the Heinrich Böll Foundation, a German think tank, said he was “speechless” at the sight of the UN leader’s meeting with Lukashenko. “It’s obviously not any more about human rights and international law,” he added.
This should also be shown to those sixth formers with a binary view on the world - an actual slave of ISIS and captive of Hamas who says there was "no difference" between them:
