Anybody out there following the Grand Am?

The 10 and the 63 got royally screwed.

Great race, though, even if I accidentally spoiled myself on the DP winner (caught the rerun at 11:00, but accidentally clicked the thread). Was interesting to see how the 01 was going to lose it. I laughed, to be honest.

I was almost glad to see the 01 get the short end of the stick. (for a change) I would've penalized the 10 for that incident between those cars honestly. The MSR car looked like it was blocking when it got wrecked by the 10. I agreed with the call to penalize the 63 actually too. Originally, I was like WTF!!! I couldn't believe it when Hartley wrecked with the 52. I'm a big APR and Starworks guy, so it was a gut punch when that happened. I was super happy to see the Krohn car finish 6th. Also noteworthy is the 77 car finishing 9th. If there was a car that needed a penalty, it was Christian Fittipaldi blocking his 🤬 off and holding up about the fastest 5-7 cars in the field still running.

Oh right, simulator test driver, I forgot.. :P

He probably has more knowledge of COTA as well as track time than any other driver there besides Emmanuel Anassis who won the first ever race at COTA. He won the Ferrari Challenge races there. Anassis was driving the BTE Sport #27 DP.

I just saw the Ferrari Challenge race at Daytona, today, about a month later.

Surprising to see the number of destroyed Ferraris, including the Ferrari of Robert Herjavec, the guy who actually does have more money than brains. Pay drivers.

Which car # was he? I remember a couple of crashes in both races. John Farano and Emmanuel Annasis were the only 2 drivers who raced in anything else besides Ferrari Challenge.

He was the one that crashed at the bus stop.

Also, I thought you were sleeping? You lying? :sly:

Cota was definitely a driver's track. The cars were slipping and sliding all over the place. It was racing the way it should be. All driver, no computer aids.

Rumors are of a Maserati GT3 competing in Grand-Am around the end of this year according to Motorsport.com...

I attended the race this past Saturday & during paddock walk the crews & drivers were first class. U could almost get into the cars!! Didn't see the Maserati. Maybe next race.

That next round being at beautiful Barber Motorsports Park (right?). This is one of the youngest, yet most beautiful race courses in the United States. It is also home to some pretty intense racing. I'm not expecting any shortage of action when the series rolls into Barber Motorsports Park for the next race of the championship.

Barber is awesome. I am possibly going because it's a roughly three hour drive for me. IndyCar will be there too.

Aren't you the traveling man this year! 3 hours I'd be there but it's about 7-8 for me.

On a side note, does anyone know where I might can find one of the checkered flag with COTA logo on it? I want two of them, one for drivers to sign in May and one to hang up.

Not sure about the flag. I especially want to go to Barber because this actually might be the last year the series goes there. With Sebring being so close to the race weekend, it might cause a date swap/removal from the schedule. The track is awesome. It needs to stay.

Barber is a fantastic track.

It was originally designed for moto gp, but it's been widened for easier overtaking. The Rolex races and especially the continental races have been great there in years past.

Grand AM speaking about a/the American DTM series... http://auto-racing.speedtv.com/article/grand-am-dtm-in-america-series-alive-gaining-momentum/
Like I thought, they intend to keep it separate from the Rolex series. Hopefully it falls through and BMW, Audi entice the GT500 teams to head over here and possibly draw in some American makes... Cadillac (CTS-V) springs to mind.

That sounds good. I don't know if it will ever work. I won't bank too hard on American dtm. Gt500 would stand a better chance.

Aren't DTM and GT500 combining their rules package for next year? Throw in an American mfg or two and lets go racin' đź‘Ť

I think it's a safe bet to say that it will work, since an American DTM was essentially the only reason BMW returned to the series. They didn't want to build a car that was mostly only going to be used in Germany. Thus, with BMW's motivation spurring on the series, it'll likely come together.

Partially, but not the only reason, besides DTM:USA there's obviously been the talk of DTM SuperGT Tie up, and IIRC even the Aussie V8's were on about a possible link up. BMW's motivation has traditionally been to race in series with international appeal, so the broader the appeal of DTM the better for BMW Since they pulled out of F1 and withdrew factory touring car teams, they don't really race anywhere else at the moment - they already have a presence in the USA with ALMS, and they've ALREADY ass-whooped their two biggest competitors in European DTM so the decision has already paid dividends, so I'm sure they're up for the challenge. If they can influence the decision they will, doesn't mean to say it would happen though. Personally I'd rather they turned their efforts back to building a proper Touring Car for proper Touring Car Racing.

I'd watch it. A Mustang, Challenger, or Camaro thrown in would be really neat. I think the Corvette already races Super GT.

Edit: Video of Mike Hedlund and the ESM Ferrari at COTA... Enjoy

Corvette in this type of Super GT? Not likely. More like GT3/GT300. This isn't about the GT300 class. This is about the new GT500/DTM class. Like the article said, they intend to keep it separate from Rolex. So Rolex will continue with their DP's or whatever their intentions are as an endurance series, and the American DTM will be that what it is in Europe, basically a sprint type race of about an hour-1.5 hours.

DTM's would embarrass the DP class in terms of speed, so if they combined them, the DP class would need serious upgrades. But their intention is to match them with LMP2 so they're going to need that regardless. Plus the DTM cars are more sprint oriented. GT500 is a bit different with some races of 1000km (Suzuka) but they're about the same pace as LMP2. DTM is more oriented to luxury marques. So that's why I said you could see Cadillac. Maybe even Lincoln if Ford decide to jump in. They would have to use a coupe though so perhaps a Mustang or a new sports/luxury coupe. I think it would be a great series with potential for 7 or 8 makes to be in it if you include the Japanese 3 and the German 3 with at least 1 American make.

Gt500 has better skidpad grip than LMP if I'm not mistaken. DP is getting better brakes along with more horsepower at least. It might get some higher downforce body kits too if necessary in order to match lmp2 while remaining cost-efficient. My bet is that the dtm/super gt series would be a support series. That might be where the GX class's intentions are. Let Mazda test out their car so they can beef it up for dtm. The new srt barricuda would be an interesting car to be raced in it.

sorry for double post, but as per Enzo Potoliccio, 8Star Motorsports will be fielding a second car full time in DP in 2014, and he's trying to get it on track late this season. Also, Stephane Sarrizin is full season with Enzo except for Mid Ohio where Tom Kimber-Smith will be the co-driver. Good news.

More Maserati rumors...possible DP engine+body as well as their Gran Turismo GT3 coming here late this year. I'll believe it when I see it though. It's not likely in my books.
